New Business Announcements/Comments38. ANNOUNCEMENTS/COMMENTSDescription N/A
Recommendation N/A
Minutes: Board member Shirley Brown stated that she hoped at some point that we can call a nutrition truce. She has been hearing meeting after meeting one side and now we are getting opposing views. We have a nutrition specialist who has her degree in nutrition and receives awards for what she does. We have looked at the plan we have and we are going forward with it. There has been some federal legislation that has passed that is going to take it another step further. Mrs. Brown stated that she would like to put that in the hands of those with the nutrition degrees. No one on the Board has those degrees and she does not think that anyone on the Board should be overriding what our nutrition experts are telling us. It is difficult enough to try to balance all of these things out between what one parent wants and what another parent wants. Would like these decisions to be made more on the scientific basis with nutrition people who have that background in it to do it. Is this fight going to just continue to escalate. The federal government has put things in place to address this and the first lady has made this a major issue. We need to continue to work with the program that the City is putting on this weekend and encourage parents to do that. It is not only what we do in school. It is what the students learn at home. Some students start KG obese and we try to do things to help change this, but it is not all of our responsibility and I think we have put that responsibility in the hands of somebody who has her degree in nutrition and I trust that she is doing a good job. I hope that we can call a truce on this that seems to be escalating war on nutrition in our schools.
Board member Caroline Zucker stated she had lunch with her grandson at a school and the younger grandson was with her. They were having lunch and the younger one opened up and took out a cookie that he had from home. He asked his brother, don't you have a cookie and his brother said no, not in this school. We are not allowed cookies in this school. Mrs. Zucker stated that she thought that was sad that here is an 11 year old, who is so aware, that he can't even have a cookie in school. The younger brother shares the cookie with his brother. Somehow or other she does not think this is right. Her daughter takes care of the education of her grandchildren. They eat properly. I am happy if they have a cookie because they are so unlikely to have a cookie, but to have to worry or not about whether you have a cookie or not; this was very upsetting to her today.
Board member Carol Todd reminded the public that school started. Please follow the rules of the road regarding our buses and watch for our children who walk and ride to school.
